PURPOSE

 

Summer Research Apprenticeship Program (SRAP) is an intensive enrichment program for precollege freshman designed to build the academic foundation for success in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) courses and to acquaint students to career opportunities and research experiences in STEM disciplines.

 

PROGRAM ACTIVITIES

  • Six week residential program on the campus of FVSU
  • Receive university credits in STEM courses
  • Gain "hands-on" experience in developing an insight into STEM research
  • Exposure to structured activites (seminars, educational workshops and field trips)
  • Tutorial classes in STEM gatekeeping courses
  • Training in scientific writing and speaking
  • Prepare written reports of independent research results
  • The summer culminates in an exciting Research Symposium

SELECTION CRITERIA/ELIGIBILITY

  • May 2010 graduating high school senior.
  • Demonstrate a strong interest in attending FVSU in STEM disciplines as a freshman in Fall 2010.
  • An overall GPA of at least 2.8 (A=4.0) and an SAT score of at least 980.
  • Recommendation from high school officials or teachers.
  • Agree to abide by university and program rules and regulations.

BENEFITS

  • Participants will receive a stipend of $500 total for six weeks
  • Paid meals and university housing.
  • Educational supplies and field trip(s) expenses covered.
  • Receive certification of achievement at the end of the program.

HOW TO APPLY

  • A completed application form.
  • A high school transcript (unofficial or official).
  • An essay (200 words) stating interest in program, including research and professionals goals.
  • Two letter of recommendation from high school guidance counselors, principal or teacher.
